BEFORE HE WAS GOD RAMAYANA: Reconsidered Recreated

Ram Varma If the killing of a swan occasioned the birth of poetry in Valmiki's heart, It was the wanton despoilation of his pristine poem, Ramayana, during Puranic times which kindled the sparks of wrath in Ram Varma's heart, which resulted in his book.

Millions of people in India and elsewhere believe that Rama, the hero of Valmiki''s ancient Sanskrit epic, Ramayana, was a historical figure like jesus Christ, and Valmiki''s timeless epic, like the New Testament, a faithful account of Rama''s life, his trials, tribulations and triumph.

ART

Clive Bell (1881-1964), an English art critic, was best known for promoting his theory of formalism. He was a philosopher who defended abstract art and was a member of the Bloomsbury School.

In this book the noted British art critic, Clive Bell, has tried to develop the complete theory of visual art. He has advanced a hypothesis by reference to which the history of art from palaeolithic days to the present becomes intelligible. Anyone who is curious to discover why we call a Persian carpet or a fresco by Piero della Francesco a work of art, will find an answer here.

Earlier, he worked as CEO, Sapphire Global Finance, and Segment Controller, Asea Brown Boveri (ABB). He has also occupied senior positions in other reputed organizations. Dr. Ray was a Visiting Professor at Groupe ESC Dijon Bourgogne (Burgundy School of Business), Dijon, France. He has presented papers on M & As at various conferences—in MIT; Syracuse University, New York; and a number of forums in India. Besides, he has presented research papers at various conferences in the UK, Australia and other countries and has published several articles in journals of international repute.

During the last couple of decades or so, mergers and acquisitions (M & As) have assumed great importance. Giant corporations and big multinational enterprises (MNEs) are constantly on the lookout for acquiring big or small companies to increase their wealth and become even bigger global giants. It is in this context that a comprehensive book on M & As such as the one authored by Professor Kamal Ghosh Ray becomes so significant.

This well-balanced and well-researched text is a harmonious blend of theoretical concepts and practical aspects on mergers and acquisitions. The book begins with an analysis of the causes of and strategic approaches to M & As. Then it goes on to give a detailed discussion on the valuation aspects—valuing the enterprise, business, brands, goodwill, HR and customer relationships, valuing synergy, valuing of private sector companies and family business besides dealing with business valuation standards in USA and India. Finally, the book concludes with a comprehensive coverage of accounting for the legal aspects of and integration in mergers and acquisitions. The text is profusely illustrated with examples, tables and case studies.

Intended as a text for PG students of management, this book would also be of immense value to students of chartered accountancy, cost accountancy and company secretaryship. In addition, it would appeal to a broad spectrum of professionals ranging from strategic planners, CFOs, CEOs, COOs, financial analysts, bankers, venture capitalists, to portfolio managers and entrepreneurs. Finally, the book would be treasured by anyone who is interested in Mergers and Acquisitions—an increasingly topical subject.

The Mahabharata: Volume 1

The Mahabharata is one of the greatest stories ever told. Though the basic plot is widely known, there is much more to the epic than the dispute between the Kouravas and Pandavas that led to the battle in Kurukshetra. It has innumerable sub-plots that accommodate fascinating meanderings and digressions, and it has rarely been translated in full, given its formidable length of 80,000 shlokas or couplets. This magnificent 10- volume unabridged translation of the epic is based on the Critical Edition compiled at the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute.

Volume 1 consists of most of Adi Parva, in which much happens before the Kouravas and the Pandavas actually arrive on the scene. This volume covers the origins of the Kuru clan; the stories of Poushya, Poulama and Astika; the births of the Kouravas and the Pandavas; the house of lac; the slaying of Hidimba and Baka; Droupadi’s marriage; and ends with the Pandavas obtaining their share of the kingdom.

Every conceivable human emotion figures in the Mahabharata, the reason why the epic continues to hold sway over our imagination. In this lucid, nuanced and confident translation, Bibek Debroy makes the Mahabharata marvellouly accessible to contemporary readers.

They are renaissance men. They are boulevardiers. They are three young Pakistani men in New York City at the turn-of-the-millennium: AC, a gangsta rap-spouting academic; Jimbo, a hulking Pushtun deejay from the streets of Jersey City; and Chuck, a wide-eyed, off-the-boat kid, searching for himself and the American Dream. In a city where origins matter less than the talent for self-invention, three Metrostanis have the guts to claim the place as their own.

But when they embark on a road trip to the hinterland weeks after 9/11 in search of the Shaman, a Gatsbyesque compatriot who seemingly disappears into thin air, things go horribly wrong. Suddenly, they find themselves in a changed, charged America.

Rollicking, bittersweet and sharply observed, Home Boy is at once an immigrant''s tale, a mystery, a story of love and loss as well as a unique meditation on Americana and notions of collective identity. It announces the debut of an original, electrifying voice in contemporary fiction.

The Art of Costume Design

Bhanu Rajopadhye Athaiya's name is synonymous with costume design in Hindi films. She began her career in the 1940s as a fashion designer for Fashion & Beauty and Eve's Weekly. The growing popularity of her sketches led to requests by actors and producers to design costumes for their films. Thus in the early 1950s she took the decision to start on a career of film costume design.

Bhanu was the first Indian to be awarded the Oscar for her work in Lord Richard Attenborough's Gandhi. Her work has been shown at the Festival of India, New York, and she has received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the South Asian International Film Festival in 2005. She was honoured with the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009, recognizing her contribution to the aesthetics of Indian cinema.

Bhanu spent her formative years in Kolhapur, and graduated from the Sir J.J. School of Arts, Mumbai, where she won a gold medal. Later she went to France on a French government scholarship to study art, culture and cinema. She has traveled extensively in cities like Tokyo, Moscow, Leningrad, London, Paris, Rome, New York and Los Angeles to study the best in art and culture. She has also visited Samark and Bukhara and Tashkent to research for the joint venture films Ajooba and Ali Baba Aur 40 Chor.

''Bhanu Athaiya is the revered doyenne of Indian costume designers...
For the benefit of future generations of filmmakers, film lovers and designers, it is important to document the landmark work done by someone with such knowledge, vision and passion. To beloved Bhanu I send my heartfelt congratulations on this splendid book.''
— From the Foreword by Lord Richard Attenborough

Bhanu Athaiya began her career in costume design in 1953. Over the next 56 years she built an extraordinary body of work that defined the aesthetics of costume design in Hindi cinema. Name any iconic look and Bhanu was behind it, whether it was Waheeda Rehman in Guide, Mumtaz in Brahmachari or Zeenat Aman in Satyam Shivam Sundaram. She has to her credit an amazing repertoire of 130 films and has worked with every director and producer of consequence, including Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt, B.R. Chopra, Yash Chopra, F.C. Mehra, Sunil Dutt, Dev Anand, Randhir Kapoor and Ashutosh Gowariker.

In this book, Bhanu recounts the eventful story of her life and her deep passion for creativity in design. She takes you through a fascinating journey, beginning with the classic look of the black and white era, moving on to the age of Technicolor typified by box-office hits like Sangam, Ganga Jumna and Waqt, and then to her more contemporary work in Lagaan and Swades. The book culminates in the story of the Oscar for the costume design of Gandhi – the first such distinction won by an Indian.

This is a classic work on the pioneering vision of a person who shaped the landmarks of Indian film costumes, set the fashion trend of the 1960s and 70s, and won Indian cinema the highest acclaim in the international arena.

INDIA`S GREAT MASTERS : A Photographic Journey into the Heart of Classical Music

Raghu Rai’s interest in music began as a child, when he wanted to be a musician. That was not to be, but his interest in classical music deepened in the mid-1960s, when he became a photojournalist. However, it was only in the mid-1980s, as photo editor of India Today magazine, that he started a systematic exploration of classical music – an obsession that continues to this day.

A trailblazer, Rai has covered many social, political and cultural themes, and his photo essays have appeared in the world’s leading magazines and newspapers, including Time, Life, National Geographic and the New York Times .
Ashok Vajpeyi, a Hindi poet-critic, translator, editor and culture-activist, is widely recognized as an outstanding promoter of culture and an innovative institution-builder.

He has authored over twenty books on poetry, criticism and art, including two on Sayed Haider Raza. Editor of many prestigious journals and a prominent public intellectual, Vajpeyi has lectured widely abroad.

Raghu Rai, India''s best known photographer, first shot a series of memorable photo essays on the masters of Indian classical music for India Today magazine in the mid- 980s. Since then, he has ever stopped shooting them – in concerts, in their homes, with their gurus, and in special locations.

Rai profiles only thirteen masters – the greatest of the great – nayak musicians who went much beyond their gharanas and broke new ground with their approach to music. They include Ravi Shankar, Ali Akbar Khan, M.S. Subbulakshmi, Mallikarjun Mansur, Kumar Gandharva, S. Balchander, Alla Rakha, Zakir Hussain, Vilayat Khan, Bismillah Khan, Kishori Amonkar, Hari Prasad Chaurasia and Bhimsen Joshi. Eight of these masters have passed away, so these portraits – in turn affectionate, intense, playful, and reverent – will remain their definitive ones, a precious and unsurpassable record of Indian musical heritage.

Only a true rasik like Rai could have taken these pictures, for they required someone who possessed not only an understanding of classical music but also complete humility. Both aspects are evident in the extraordinary images that follow.

The book is accompanied by a perceptive text written by noted writer and music expert Ashok Vajpeyi, chairman of Lalit Kala Akademi. His profiles of these musicians show what makes them great, alongside giving us remarkable snapshots of their lives, on and off the stage. A fonder photographic tribute to the custodians of Indian classical music could not have been possible. This is undoubtedly a collector''s edition.

‘It’s over—it happened—there’s nothing more to say. I, Maloti Mukherji, someone’s wife, and someone’s mother—I did it. Did it with Jayanto. Jayanto wanted me, and I him … How did it happen? Easy. In fact I don’t know why it didn’t happen before—I’m surprised at my self-restraint, at Jayanto’s patience.’

Banned when it was first published in the Bengali in 1967 on charges of obscenity, It Rained All Night went on to become a best-seller.

Maloti, an attractive middle-class Bengali girl, marries the bookish college lecturer Nayonangshu only to find him insecure, sexually timid and unable to satisfy her. She discovers passion in the arms of the confident, earthy journalist Jayanto whose love provides her solace from the demands of her wifely duties. Maloti and Jayanto’s growing intimacy does not go unnoticed by Nayonangshu, but his pride restrains him from reaching out to his wife.

Bold, explicit and shockingly candid, It Rained All Night is an unforgettable tale of desire, adultery, jealousy and love.

Trickster City: Writings from the Belly of the Metropolis

Shveta Sarda has been working in Sarai–CSDS since 2001. Her translations have appeared in the Sarai Readers.

Trickster City is an extraordinary composite of writings on Delhi by a group of young people who have, over several years, sustained among themselves and with others around them, a relationship of conversing about the city.

This collection chronicles the loss of home and livelihood through urban eviction; encounters with the agencies of the state; love stories gone awry; the fragility of relationships; and the sustained effort to build life in anticipation of beauty and pleasure.

The writers draw from experiences, events and biographies, part fictive, part documentary, to inscribe an image of the city that is rarely available. There is a yearning in their writings for the expression of the poetic and allegorical alongside the harshness of everyday existence.Trickster is an aphoristic and playful meander in search of a new language that expresses the profound uncertainties and delicately realised joys of urban life.

Praise for Trickster City

''Trickster City is the gentle, compassionate anti-dote to the mass of mail-fisted representations of the ‘under-class’ that has become so popular these days. The writers that make up this collection are almost amazing in their restraint, their ability to distil that perfect moment that conjures up the times they live in. Story after story evokes the ways in which people keep love alive while a kind of terror, the terror of being poor in a cruel city, lurks offstage, just a midnight knock away.

Professor Arora was regarded as a highly competent subject matter expert in academia and industry alike. His research areas included fluid mechanics, heat transfer, refrigeration and air conditioning, and alternative refrigerants and thermodynamic cycles.

During his illustrious career, Professor Arora was the recipient of several outstanding teacher awards, national scholarships, merit awards, and graduate fellowship. He is credited with 91 research publications, 8 technical reports, 19 industrial projects and 3 pending patents.

This textbook offers a comprehensive and wide-ranging introduction to theoretical principles and practical aspects of refrigeration and air conditioning systems. Written by an outstanding teacher with 30 years of distinguished career at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, this work created by late Dr. R.C. Arora (1945–2005) is intended to lead students to a deeper understanding and a firm grasp of the basic principles of this fast-growing and exciting subject area. This text is ideally suited for undergraduate education in mechanical engineering programmes and specialized postgraduate education in thermosciences. The book is designed to typically appeal to those who like a more rigorous presentation.

The text begins by reviewing, in a simple and precise manner, the physical principles of three pillars of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, namely thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics. Following an overview of the history of refrigeration, subsequent chapters provide exhaustive coverage of the principles, applications and design of several types of refrigeration systems and their associated components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators, and expansion devices. Refrigerants too, are studied elaboratively in an exclusive chapter.

The second part of the book, beginning with the historical background of air conditioning in Chapter 15, discusses the subject of psychrometrics being at the heart of understanding the design and implementation of air conditioning processes and systems, which are subsequently dealt with in Chapters 16 to 23. It also explains the design practices followed for cooling and heating load calculations.

Each chapter contains several worked-out examples that clarify the material discussed and illustrate the use of basic principles in engineering applications. Each chapter also ends with a set of few review questions to serve as revision of the material learned.
