Back To Health Through Yoga

Dr Ramesh Bijlani is the author of ten books, more than 200 research articles, and more than forty popular articles. He was elected a Fellow of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India) in 2005, and conferred an honorary D.Sc. in Yoga by Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhan Samsthana, Bangalore in 2006.

Back to Health through Yoga does not seek to transplant a dozen yogic postures in modern medicine. It looks upon yoga as a precious tool in mind-body medicine. The postures, diet and sleep (called physical culture in yoga), meditation (as first aid for stress), and the yogic attitude (for long time relief from stress) are all part of yoga, and all these have a place in mind-body medicine. Mind-body medicine aims at correcting the faults in lifestyle responsible for the illness, and thereby creating the best conditions for reversal of the process which led to the illness. This book is meant for the intelligent and inquisitive reader who will use it to discover the roots of health and disease. Also included are reasonable guidelines for healthy lifestyles based on yoga. Stress management has been discussed on the basis of Patanjali’s enumeration of the sources of klesas. The major lifestyle disorders have also been discussed individually, bringing together to one place, our current understanding of these diseases and their prevention and management using an integrated approach that dissolves the barrier between modern science and ancient wisdom.

1984

George Orwell (1903-1950) was the pen name of Eric Blair. He was born to Richard Walmesley Blair and Ida Mabel Limonzin as their second child in Motihari, Bengal (India) in 1903 where his father worked as a civil servant. He was taken to England at the age of one along with his mother and sister. After finishing his studies at Eton he joined The Indian Imperial Police at Burma (now Myanmer) as an assistant superintendent. Eventually his mounting dislike of imperial rule led him to resign from the post in 1928 and return to England. He was a confirmed anti-imperialist.

1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell''s prophetic, nightmarish vision in 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. 1984 is still the great modern classic of ''''negative utopia'' - a startlingly original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny the novel''s hold on the imagination of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions - a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

Buddha’s Orphans is a novel permeated with the sense of how we are irreparably connected to the mothers who birthed us and of the way events of the past, even those we are ignorant of, inevitably haunt the present. But most of all it is an engrossing, unconventional love story and a seductive, transporting read.

The 3 Mistakes of My Life

In late-2000, a young boy in Ahmedabad called Govind dreamt of having a business. To accomodate his friends Ish and Omi''s passion, they open a cricket shop. Govind''s wants to make money and thinks big. Ish is all about nurturing Ali, the batsman with a rare gift. Omi knows his limited capabiltiies and just wants to be with his friends. Will they make it? Can an individual''s dreams overcome the nightmares offered by real life? Can we succeed despite a few mistakes?

Five Point Someone

Five Point Someone is a story about three friends in IIT who are unable to cope.

The book starts with a disclaimer, ''This is not a book to teach you how to get into IIT or even how to live in college. In fact, it describes how screwed up things can get if you don''t think straight.''Three hostelmates - Alok, Hari and Ryan get off to a bad start in IIT - they screw up the first class quiz. And while they try to make amends, things only get worse. It takes them a while to realize- If you try and screw with the IIT system, it comes back to double screw you. Before they know it, they are at the lowest echelons of IIT society. They have a five-point-something GPA out of ten, ranking near the end of their class. This GPA is a tattoo that will remain with them, and come in the way of anything else that matters - their friendship, their future, their love life. While the world expects IITians to conquer the world, these guys are struggling to survive.

One Night At The Call Center

The novel revolves around a group of six call center employees working in Connexions call center in the Delhi suburb of Gurgaon in Haryana. Calcutta, the Star of the East, is a great city, a City of Palaces, of people and of ''Joy''. Calcutta''s buildings are entertaining in a compelling sense, akin to a great epic drama, and so they are, in a serious pictorial sense as well - a grand display gallery. Because of its political and economic history, the city and its background have been lavishly documented. As a matter of record it has sufficient awareness of its own architectural heritage. Calcutta''s Edifice allows these buildings to ''speak for themselves''. Illustrated by the author, this book strives to achieve a point of view not of a foreigner but of an appreciator. With notes of the past and seductive speculations of the future, it examines the architectural and associated apparatuses of Calcutta as it is.

GLIMPSES OF ARCHITECTURE IN KERALA: Temples and Palaces

Ramu Katakam studied architecture at Cambridge, and has been a practicing architect for the past thirty years. He gave up practice some time ago to do research on traditional Indian architecture and has been travelling in Kerala for the past three years.

Kerala has been termed ''God''s own country'' in recent years. Its landscape and waterways are quite magnificent. However, little has been seen of its masterpieces of temple architecture. This book attempts to capture the style and design of these timber building and also illustrate the quality of space around them. Indian temples are to be seen with their surroundings in unity with the sky and the low-lying landscape or with the sky and the hills around. Architecture of the past in India attempts to create an experience with a sense of longing-something to fill the void within. The masters of design in an earlier era were concerned with the balance of a building and how it could please the eye. Glimpses of Architecture in Kerala is a beginning in trying to examine these intentions.
